The majority of the work I do doesn’t need a deep “trance” or level of relaxation, I do a lot of work with my clients in a very light trance or level of relaxation. Encouraging my clients to allow a sense of calmness to flow through them in whatever way feels right for them is perfect.
You may then shout, “but I can’t relax”, more often than not my clients relax well when they are instructed to relax, listening to someone talk you through any relaxation process is often easier than trying to do it yourself. This may sound daft but when my clients are within my therapy space, they feel safe and comfortable, this is the only way I will be able to ask then to close their eyes and listen to my instruction and allow their body to relax, when the body relaxes then the mind will follow. If my clients do not feel able to close their eyes and trust the process then we begin by, the client, lowering their gaze, they look at their knees or feet. By asking my clients to lower their gaze it helps them not to be distracted by external things. I continue to encourage my clients to close their eyes when they feel able too. I have worked with clients that prefer to keep their eyes open, it is possible and still helps them to move forwards.
So, I feel this blows the myth of deep trance well and truly out of the water, if you can experience hypnosis with your eyes open and benefit from it then a deep level of trance isn’t always needed. I have worked with clients who have entered a deep trance or level of relaxation, I have worked with clients who relax only lightly and both have moved forwards and benefited from therapy.
Some other forms of ‘hypnosis’ – if you ever lose yourself in a book, you become so absorbed in it that you can lose all sense of time. You may be traveling on a journey that you have done many times before, you find you are suddenly at your destination and you have no real awareness of the journey, yes another form of hypnosis. Watching TV is another, becoming so engrossed in it that you do not hear someone talking to you. the saying “away with the fairies”, there are so many forms of natural hypnosis that I am sure you have probably experienced it at some point in your life, even if it was when you were young.
One of the ways I use hypnosis is when I am working in an exploratory way or style. This very simply means I ask my client to take a feeling and see where it takes them, this feeling may take them to a place, a feeling, a place in time or a person, for example. I really enjoy working this way, this way involves only a light level or relaxation or hypnosis as I want the client to talk to me, I want them to share with me where they go in their minds. It can be very interesting working in this way, as clients often are very surprised when they find that their mind dose takes them somewhere. Most clients will worry that this style of work will not work for them as they don’t believe that they will be able to “go anywhere” in their minds. I haven’t worked with anyone yet who hasn’t been able to work in this way, some need a little more reassurance than others, we are all individual.
I hope this helps you to feel more comfortable about hypnosis and hypnotherapy, I have a blog called Hypnotherapy or Stage Hypnosis, what’s the difference? If you wish to find out more about the different forms of Hypnosis pop over and have a read.
The therapy I offer called BWRT is not a form of hypnosis and takes up a vast percentage of the work I do, so if hypnosis in any form isn’t for you then BrainWorking Recursive Therapy may be the therapy for you. It is fabulous for fears, phobias, anxiety and panic, its fast and extremely effective.
I also do a form of parts therapy WSN, would you like to find out whether you are a Warrior, Settler or Nomad? Would you like to find out more about how these parts of you can be used in ways to help you? Here is another blog WSN, what is it and what does it stand for?
