Stress, if left untreated, turns into chronic stress and eventually tips over into burnout.
Stress makes people feel that they have too much on their plate.
Burnout feels like you have nothing left to give, you feel depleted.
Our bodies are not designed to be in a constant state of high vigilance also known as the fight, flight, freeze mode.
Take a moment and have a look back over the last 6 months, up to a year if you can.
Note down everything that comes to mind that has caused stress, not just the big things, but the little thing too, here are some headings to help.
- work stress
- family stress
- health stress
- pandemic stress
- school/university stress (your stress or family member’s stress)
- pet stress (illness for example)
- travel stress
- political stress (work or UK-wide, maybe both)
- economic stress (rise in the cost of living)
Burnout is an accumulation of stress, the small ones still add to that pile of stress.
I read in an article about Burnout, Stress and Anxiety, that someone they knew described burnout as
“death by a thousand cuts”
A powerful description
